By the time I had actually given it a shot, it was already on the 11th Doctor. I remember watching the first season with the 9th Doctor and thinking, Holy moly, this is cheesy." and I immediately dismissed it. That was my first mistake.
Doctor Who is a series that becomes apparently amazing to you after you connect with a Doctor and Christopher simply wasn't the Doctor I connected with. David's 10th Doctor was the one who made me fall in love with the series. He was sassy, intelligent, empathetic, and at times volatile. And as you continue to watch the series you begin to feel a connection with these characters because you begin to enjoy their adventures. You root for them, you feel a sense of loss as people come and go in the series, and you generally grow to love them.
The series is simply about an alien (alien to us ;p) traveling through time and space in his Tardis (time/space machine. He is a benevolent observer so to speak; but more times than not, he involves himself with the people he encounters. And more times than not, he has a companion. The relationship between the Doctor and the companion is a very important aspect to the show and always rather charming. They fight, they laugh and they get into a lot of trouble, but the series itself becomes truly special as you continue to watch it.
The moments throughout doctor who can make you laugh, cry, angry or whatever else it wishes to draw out of you. And the show has strong enough writers to be able to do that successfully.
But be warned, if you fall in love with Doctor Who, that is the kiss of death. You will become a Whovian. You might even resort to watching the classic black and white episodes just for a fix ( p. The show has always selected its cast smartly and the stories it presents are always well constructed. Some episodes are better than others; but overall, the show is quite an amazing piece of art within its respective genre and I would recommend it to anyone who loves a good heartfelt, fun, intelligent, and adventure driven sci-fi.

Sadly, this episode denies us the rainbow-haired greeting and Darcey wearing what appears to be a tshirt with titties on it underneath a wedding dress, but fret not, there is still much mayo to mess your mug. In the ghost of 90DF past, Natalie burned out on a scooter to escape Ashley’s pre-Angela ponytail. Now Big Ed is here to show us the true magic of mounting the scooter steed, complete with tiny Teddy the Wonder Dog tucked into a bubble backpack. He scoots about town acknowledging friendly passers-by, tiny Teddy poking his little dog nose out the hatch window. Can you imagine being mad at Big Ed? That’s like being furious at a Prince song, or yelling at candy. It just doesn’t work. Anyway, Big Ed got his nickname when he summoned it from the land of Narf: “Because I’m 4’11. I’m short. Because of the short thing. It’s ironic. Wait, is that ironic? Alanis Morrisette destroyed us all. I am short, so fake big. People say ‘Hey Big Ed’ and then the lulz happen. Get it? ” he over-explains, for the first time but not the last. Teddy the Wonder Dog is introduced as his best friend, which I support, because four legs good, two legs bad. To keep Teddy in biscuits, Big Ed is gainfully employed as a photographer, and he succeeds in not creeping out clients with his praise while they arrange themselves in leafy garments. He also has a spent marriage under his belt that fell apart because he cheated on The Mrs. Paul managed to justify arson, and Big Ed is all, “Yeah, I fucked up. ” I’m going to pause to knight Sir Big Ed, first of his name, defender of self awareness, reclaimer of accountability, noble speaker to nicknames, carrier of the canine. Big Ed spent 28 post-marriage years as a singleton, raising his daughter and rocking his career, until he entered the devil’s punch bowl known as The Facebook, and found a 19 year-old girl from the Philippines to love for her personality. He’s been sending Rosemarie gifts since their fourth week of acquaintance, and she hasn’t received any of them yet, but this hasn’t dissuaded Ed. Of course, many of the gifts he sent are his special requirements for his skin condition, but still, those pillows and fancy sheets will linger long after his itchy self is gone. He scoots on over to UPS with his latest package, and introduces us to an attractive UPS employee that doubles as Big Ed’s therapist. The cameras zoom in on that wedding ring, because they’ve known our thirst since Larissa’s slow-jam of a lawyer bass-lined into our hearts. They also linger on the background Pride flag for a minute, so we know the UPS welcomes all parched persons. Then Ed goes to visit his mom Norma, who resembles his daughter, to ask if she can dog sit Teddy. She’s an immigrant from Mexico herself, and is skeptical of Ed’s relationship, and his haircut. Big Ed reveals that he’s already bought a ring and he’s serious, but Mother Norma traverses this obstacle to press him about his daughter, and he admits he hasn’t considered her feelings about dating a woman younger than she is. They haven’t spoken in four weeks, and Ed realizes how foolish this is, and calls her from his car to leave a message, asking to talk to her about what she’s experiencing. Did anyone else pause to make sure they were watching the right show when this happened? Did I get too high on Avery’s photographs? Definitely, because is Ed’s next scene he’s trotting into his kitchen wearing a festive kimono, to fetch his unlabeled hair mayonnaise from the fridge, and a slotted turner for application purposes. He monkey slaps the slotted wonder against the jar’s mouth, which fails to open enough to receive this utensil, then mushes it onto his head, all the while wearing latex gloves to protect his hands from the hazards of egg yolk. He quickly explains that this is a solution to a brittle hair problem informed by box dye devotion, and his daughter is holding vinegar rinse and rosemary oil wisdom hostage until he ghosts the 19 year-old. Once he’s combed his hair into a full Fonzie, he skypes Rose, who has a hand-gesture conversation with Big Ed before she holds up a child named Prince to call Ed daddy, which in the tongue of 90DF means “man over 25. ” Big Ed then admits that he doesn’t entirely trust her, and he’s “kind of a germaphobe” which means he’s going to need her to take an STD test. “Fuck that! ” Lisa interjects. “Wow, my influence is really strong in this episode, ” Paul is ready to help. “Remember, since there’s a margin of error, she should take at least six STD tests. No, eight. No, at least a dozen. I need to call Karine…” Big Ed has also noted that she has 4, 000 friends on Facebook, which definitely isn’t because she’s 19 years old and accepts any and every friend request. Unsettled by this headcount of strangers, he asks for more information, which reminds Rose that her internet connection has been acting up lately, so Big Ed is going to have to sort this out with Teddy and the UPS guy over mayo. Remember that marijuana leaf I’m trashed on? Meet Avery, a Seattle stereotype doing yoga on the beach, the cameras faithfully recording every pose from the most sexualized angle possible. She’s a single mom, dental hygienist, and Grey’s Anatomy enthusiast, but still leaves (see what I did? ) sufficient time for her true passion: taking photographs of pot leaves on top of food. Now I don’t have a degree in weed or anything, but I’m pretty sure the bulk of the high comes from a component of the plant known as the bud, which is generally broken up and either cooked into a candy confection of some kind, or stuffed into a pipe for my partner to loudly judge from the open window of our kitchen. The leaves are for making tea when you’ve fucked up and run out of weed. Avery met an instagram dude from Australia named Ash, who is a relationship coach, specializing in women he wants to fuck. This coaching is communicated through bug-eyed videos stuffed fat with a hodgepodge of new age circle-jerk phrases. “Female energy connection journey, ” He begins. “Communication gratitude motivation positive conscious negativity togetherness pleasure. Toxins true heart-centered twin-flame dream it be it core feminine power. Cursive signature, vague reference to eastern traditions, photo of a sunset. ” Wooed by this gobbledegook, Avery is planning a visit to meet him, hoping he’s a better option than the dot-com dudebro who talked her into moving to California and naming her child Silver (as in hi-ho). Sure, she’s a single mom without much money to spend, but that has never stopped anyone on this show. At the same time, she’s skeptical of his very specific business, but is still willing to lean hard on a babysitter tasked with caring for her children while she heads down under and see if this man is above board (I did it again). Before doing this, she stops by to hang out with her friend Jared, whom she describes as a “pretty big deal in the cannabis industry. ” Something tells me all of her relationships include a person she would describe in similar fashion, with similar apartments with lavish views. Anyway, Jared has preserved a single pot leaf in a green bag, so that she can pull it out and sniff it and ask the oracle if this is the one, while he looks at her in confusion and wonders if she wants more from the dumpster he’s filled out back. Jared and Avery dated many moons ago, and according to Jared, she drove him to the brink of madness with her sniffed-leaf salads, and he’s worried that this is going to be another bad decision. Avery has no shortage of attractive friends, and later meets another set of them so they can express astonishment at her choices. Avery admits that it’s possible that, as a relationship coach, he might just know the right things to say. She confesses there have been “red flags, ”and these flags need to have a theme song already if we’re going to keep saluting them while they wave in the air. Said flags include a bankruptcy, which prevents him from visiting her in the US. Ash says this bankruptcy is due to a shady business partner who took all of his money, and he kept this under wraps because…hmm. Josh and Jen are worried. Avery then harkens back to the first time the red ran up the pole, when she noticed THE FACEBOOK status of Ash was not switched to “in a relationship” or “it’s complicated” or “for fuck’s sake delete facebook already. ” So they took the left hand path to THE INSTAGRAM, and discovered the photos he had posted of Avery were deleted. Nothing else, just the Avery pics. Red flag waving in the breeze, Ash explains that this was the work of a rogue hacking collective responsible for countless unsolicited dick pics, and publicly posted racist comments. Quick, someone call Neo to get inside the Matrix and bring this menacing band of selective deleters to justice! This information leaves Josh and Jen staring at her blankly, wondering if this free trip and television debut is worth meeting yet another man with mayo hair. On to Geoffrey, whom you might recognize from the classic Julia Roberts’ movie Sleeping With the Enemy. When Geoffrey’s not turning around all the cans in the cupboard so the labels face forward, or discovering his wife chopped her hair and flushed her ring to flee to another country, he’s trolling the internet for someone who doesn’t have access to American media. Let’s just hit the bullet points of this fucking guy: Not one but FOUR ex-wives, all of which have accused him of domestic battery, one of whom accused him of repeatedly raping her, and a felony drug conviction that prevents him from moving to another country. Brittany, wife #4, is 19 years his junior, and has joint Canada-Jamaica citizenship. She fled to Canada, saying that he abused her and her two sons. Despite Brittney’s declaration that she feared for their safety, the judge inexplicably awarded custody to Geoffrey…and the kid died within one month. I’m not saying this is perfect math, but there’s enough equation there to equal how the fuck did that kid have a deadly seizure? But you didn’t think he stopped at four instances of abuse, did you? He’s also accused of beating, raping, and kidnapping his last girlfriend. This instance, along with wife #3 submitting an affidavit attesting to him being a fucking psychopath, allowed Brittany to finally gain full custody of their remaining child. Anyway, after her husband’s death and her significant weight loss, she started posting on The Gram, where she met Williams: a 40 year-old restaurant manager who is possibly invisible. Yolanda declares that she enjoys the feeling of being liked, and she talks to him up to five times a day. She receives a flurry of text messages while talking to the camera, and Yolanda declares, “He puts a rose next to my name every time. How can you not fall in love with that? ” Williams is going to have to register for Paul’s next awkward marathon into the jungle now, because everyone is coming for him if he does Yolanda dirty. Yolanda reveals that she lied about her age, telling Williams she’s 45 instead of 51. She’s certain that they haven’t FaceTimed only because he doesn’t have a camera. Later, Yolanda declares there’s nothing sexier than a British accent, and she calls Williams…who has an African accent. Will someone please download an episode of Downton Abbey or something for this woman? Yolanda then admits that initially he asked for money so he could book a Maria flight to not visit her, but she insisted that she would come visit him instead. Yolanda reveals more about her relationship with Duane, who apparently had troubles with the law, and spent the last six years of his life in prison. He didn’t want visitors during this time, so Yolanda was denied the opportunity to say goodbye. Can someone please bring Teddy the Wonder Dog to Yolanda for comfort? Please? She gathers her children for dinner, and admits she met someone and is traveling to meet him. Her kids accuse the man of having a last name for a first name, and seem worried that he isn’t real. One daughter cries, perhaps because her mom is trying to move on, and then Yolanda cries and asks them to be happy for her, because she needs a partner. The well-adjusted children tone it down and say they hope it works out, and later take Cara aside to remind her she should go for the eyes and groin first. Meanwhile, everyone at home isolates a relative or friend better suited for Yolanda, and we will later debate the best options using charts and graphs. Next week! Additionally, all seasons have subtitle styles matching, so that you can binge-watch everything without feeling like something is not right. Summary: All episodes are in 1080p x265/HEVC, Bluray rips. The Atlantic movie is x264. They have a Japanese dub, stylised soft subtitles and chapters. Multiple subs included, such as retail ones, and ones by various subbing groups (Shinsen-Subs, Chiyuu, Karin). Most of the filler content is gone. I tried to keep close to the manga, although sometimes it was very hard since many scenes were never animated, or they had a different context or even characters. If possible, I did not use re-encoding during the cuts, to keep the quality of the videos high. Software used: MKVToolNix (muxing), SolveigMM Video Splitter (cuts with minimal re-encoding), Subtitle Edit. Black Butler 07: old ep13; at 03:45 added a scene from ep19 in Lau's opium den (the scene is so vague, it fits there perfectly); at 08:14 removed the dog from the filler episodes. Black Butler 08: old ep14; removed Angela's spice (21:11-21:40). Black Butler 09: old ep15; removed all mentions of Angela's spice (06:08, 12:50-13:05; 13:55-16:27; 17:06-19:42; 19:44-19:56); removed preview of the next episode. I wish there was a scene where Lau and Ran-Mao hunt Harold and Mina, but it was never animated. Book of Circus 01: this episode is a mashup of chapters 05 and 23 and filler content. Decided to leave it as it is. Future: If I can get a better quality version of the Book of the Atlantic (would also prefer it to be x265), I will update this post. I'm your resident friendly Halsey-stan and Badlands is my favorite album of the 10's! It's also Halsey's favorite, so she has taste. I've previously done write-ups on S. O. S., Ghost and Room 93, if you want to check out any of those! Badlands is an electro-pop or if your name is Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, "alternative" album, made by Halsey and executively produced by her boyfriend at the time, Lido. The album itself is a "concept album", centered around the Dystopian society Badlands - all a metaphor for Halsey's mental state at the time of writing the album. Now, this album is excellent musically, but what really made this my FAVORITE of the decade, was the marketing campaign surrounding it (also the fact that I managed to see her both at the beginning and end of 2016 - go see her @ the Manic tour, her music is at its best live. ) It truly felt like a moment and I don't think anything can top it for me. If you remember Harry Styles' Eroda-marketing campaign from a couple months ago, it was something like that - just better (through my nostalgia-tinted glasses, at least). Much of the "concept" part of the concept album was just visible through the marketing. First came the website - (of which I managed to find a single archived picture). There was also the touristy twitter account @VisitBadlands, which posted cryptic tweets related to the album release. There was a tourist phone number you could call, complete with a creepy message from Halsey herself. She gave out passports with tips of how to survive in the Badlands (the answer: Keep Running). She even "leaked" the album cover through the twitter account, and played small snippets of Young God on the website. It also doubled up as her merch store and the place she dropped her first set of tour dates. Halsey used this marketing campaign to "leak" a version of Coming Down, through a soundcloud account called BadlandsRadio. She also sent some free posters and stickers to her fans to promote the record. There were treasure hunts, having people run all over New York and taking them to the places in New York that inspired Badlands - the prizes were all access backstage passes to the final show of the tour. Basically, the whole era was really interactive and I don't think fans would have connected with the album as well as we did, without it. An important part of this album, regardless of how much you like or dislike it, was the 'era' it was produced in - the TumblrTM era. Everything from the lyrics, the aesthetics, the production points to Badlands being THE tumblr record. Not necessarily the most widely enjoyed album by Tumblr users, but it's the most Tumblr-esque of them all. It's very much a post-Pure Heroine and Born To Die-album. Halsey stood out with her long, blue hair and rants about feminism and racism and also literally everything else. So, now that I've talked way too much about the era as a whole, I'm gonna break down the full record as individual songs: Already choking on my pride, so there's no use crying about it. This shimmery piece of electropop opens up Badlands. It serves as an introduction to the Dystopian society of Badlands. Halsey immediately sets the tone for a struggle between her, the hero, and the (patriarchal) society around her. There's a mention of "they" wanting to make her their queen, which combined with the quoted lyrics above and the chants of "Agnus Dei" makes it clear that being the queen isn't something Halsey wants - it's a sacrifice she's making. This song was later turned into an orchestral version for the "Huntsman: Winter's War"-movie. I sold my soul to a three-piece, and he told me I was holy. The story continues in Hold Me Down, which was inspired by Halsey's dealings with men in the music industry - specifically Atlantic Records' Publishing Group, which tried to sign her. It also samples Easy by Son Lux. She refers to the men she's dealing with as the devil, again setting herself up to be a hero in the Badlands. At the same time she admits her flaws, calling herself selfish, filled with demons and spineless. Because of this, she lets herself be held down by the devil. Survival of the richest, the city’s ours until the fall. If you have heard just a single song off of this album, this is probably the one. This song, along with the impromptu Blink-182 mall cover are go-to "easy" punches for Halsey Haters. They argue it's faux-edgy, faux-anthemic, shallow and just plain annoying. The backlash against this song even resulted in Halsey dis-owning if for like 2 full years, and calling it "ironic" (which it most definetly wasn't). While I get why this song could rub some people wrong, I would argue that it's a very catchy song and that the lyrics aren't "faux"-anything - they're so earnest that it borders on painful. The lyrics may be cringey, but it won't stop me from yelling along to the song while driving in my car. The first verse talks about the nouveau rich, getting famous through the internet, while the second verse talks about gay marriage - which was made legal in all states just two small months before this album dropped. It's a song about believing in the youth and believing that society can change. Sick and full of pride, all we do is drive. Drive is a pretty straightforward love song about being in love with someone, but not knowing how to go about it. The strength of the song lies in its production and the beautiful harmonization between Halsey and the male backing vocals provided by Lido. The production creates a beautiful backdrop for a simple love story - the sound of Halsey turning on the ignition, the turn signal-beat, the swerving noises, it all contrast with the simple guitar plucking. If you close your eyes while listening to this, you can feel you're in the car watching a very intimate story play out. Halsey described this as one of the few happy songs on Badlands, saying it's the point in the story where she finally leaves the Badlands. Don't belong to no city, don't belong to no man. This song was originally included on Halsey's debut EP, Room 93, and was carried over onto the deluxe edition of Badlands. It's a self-empowerment anthem about Halsey taking power in her relationship with both a person (Zach, the boy behind bricks) and the city she lived in, New York City. Whenever she does this song live she explains that the song is " a reminder that you do not belong to anybody but yourself ". It sounds trippy, dreamy and distant. Throughout the song you can hear a "hurricane"-motif, which gets a call-back in Gasoline. Feet first, don't fall or we'll be running again. This. This is my favorite Halsey song of all time (unless anything on Manic manages to rear its head forth). Roman Holiday was produced by the masterful trio that is Captain Cuts. The song is such an explosion of joy, nostalgia and freedom. Halsey explained that this song was about "escaping from the problems of your real life – not looking back on them and finding solace somewhere else". The song sounds escapist, but in a freeing way. The choruses are fiery and then the bridge comes along and amps everything up another level. It's the perfect pop song. Roman Holiday introduces the motif of "running, again". While the lyric on its own doesn't make much sense, combined with the rest of the album, it becomes apparent that the thing that Halsey is running from is her mental illness - the depression and the mania. And I swear I hate you when you leave but I like it anyway. Ghost is a really fast paced electropop cut, originally from Room 93. It was the song that put Halsey on the map, the song that got her signed. The original demo-version went slightly viral on Soundcloud and suddenly she had labels knocking on her door. She ended up with Astralwerks, mostly because they gave her a lot of creative freedom. A knee ways, this song is very dreamy and the verses are super catchy. It's shimmery and dark, very TumblrTM. This song (which is most definetly not about Halsey's relationship with a certain Matt Healy from The 1975) was a fan favorite before the album even dropped, having been played at a live show a couple moths prior to the Badlands release. I remember literally downloading the Troubadour-live version as an mp3 and putting it in my Spotify-library. That's how thirsty us fans were for new Halsey songs in early 2015. The song grew out of a poem she posted on her Tumblr, which she ended up turning into the bridge. She ended up getting accused of plagiarizing that bridge from a Tumblr post — that she, Halsey herself made. The stripped version replaces this bridge with this simple sentence: "Art is not what I create - what I create is chaos", which definetly holds true to this date. Following the song is a cute little interlude that serves as the bridge between Colors and Strange Love. Everybody's waiting up, to hear if I dare speak your name. It's really nice of Halsey to put the song telling everybody off for knowing that Colors is about Matty, right next to the song itself. If you want to read a poem? post? that Halsey wrote about their relationship, you can do so here at your own discretion. The song is about her being allowed to use her personal experiences in her song writing, but still having the right to a private personal life - she doesn't have to share anything and any piece of information is a gift to her fans. Personally, this is one of my least favorite Halsey songs. It's very repetitive, I find her "whoahs" annoying, the bass isn't enjoyable and I find the subject matter pretty "meh". Sorry, /u/Leixander. At least the bridge kinda slaps. I found a savior, I don't think he remembers. Coming Down continues the streak of "Songs About Matt Healy" on Badlands. Like on Colors, she compares their short-lived relationship to religion, saying that she found both God and the devil in the same person. She calls him both a martyr and a savior, their relationship confined to hotel rooms. Halsey knows the relationship is doomed - it keeps breaking down, but she keeps hoping that if she just makes it through another night, it will all be okay. But as we all know, it didn't turn out that way (and thank GOD for that because they would have been such an insufferable public couple). I've tried to wash you away, but you just won't leave. Halsey opens Haunting with a plea for her lover to keep haunting her, despite the fact that they're no good for her - a recurring theme on this album. She admits that she's moved on, in a way, because has a new boyfriend (Lido), made of gold (she ends up calling him King Midas on HFK's 100 Letters). However, she keeps thinking of what she used to have with this past lover, even though they "weren't looking for" Halsey. The best part of this song is honestly the production, which is shimmery and dark and layered. The last 30 seconds, where Halsey's heavy breathing gets intermingled with a tender guitar is just perfection. I think there’s a flaw in my code, these voices won’t leave me alone. Gasoline is, in my opinion, the heart of Badlands - so I really don't understand why it's been delegated to just being a deluxe track. However, despite this, Gasoline has been certified platinum and it's one of the most streamed Badlands tracks on Spotify - without a single drop of promo. The track is a real look into Halsey's dealings with her mental health - a look at her 'Manic's self before Manic, the album was even thought of. It's a straight up banger with flawless production - the callback to Hurricane is just fantastic. It's fast paced, it's lyrically impressive, it has interesting production elements - Gasoline is Halsey at her best. I tried to hold these secrets inside me, my mind's like a deadly disease. We continue the mental health-focus in Control. While Gasoline is mostly a look into Halsey's anxieties surrounding her fame, which relates to her bipolar disorder, Control is straight up just about her manic brain. The track has some really great haunting 'circus'-y production elements, while Halsey paints a picture of an empty, creaking house filled with spiderwebs - just like a horror movie, with Halsey herself as the villain. The bridge tackles the very same themes she deals with on "Ashley" off of manic - her wanting to immortalize herself through her music. And we'll be running, running, running. Again. At the very beginning of Young God, you can hear something that sounds like a demonic chant. In reality it's just "Forever cursed in love are the observant - forever a slave to the detail" reversed. Sonically, Young God feels like a sequel to Haunting, having the same type of shimmery and layered production details. It tells the story of two lovers who badly want to escape their current human situation, just the two of them together. It contrasts the worlds of heaven with sin, by saying that the only way they'll get to heaven is by committing sins, ie: " if you wanna go to heaven, you should fuck me tonight ". Young God also concludes the "running, again" motif - first by saying that they'll be staying above all the people running, in heaven together and then at the end, admitting that they'll be the two running. I keep a close watch on this heart of mine. I keep my eyes wide open all the time. This song, originally written and performed by Johnny Cash, was included on the deluxe version of Badlands instead of the absolute banger that is Garden. Why? This cover is absolute garbage and I like to pretend that it doesn't exist. Halsey says she included it on the album (and also made it so much "darker") because the "Badlands"-Halsey was literally addicted to their partner. However, that is no excuse for the terrible mixing, the lazy industrial sounds and the general "Car Commercial" vibes of the cover. #JusticeForGarden It's been nearly 5 years since Halsey released this album and just a few short days since she released her latest album, Manic. Keeping in tradition with my other writeups, I have some questions that y'all can answer if you'd like to: What do you think of 'Halsey' as an artist in 2015 vs the 'Halsey' of today? Have your perspective on Badlands changed as the years have gone by? Where do you think Halsey would have been as an artist now if Closer didn't happen? (Keeping in mind that Closer blew up right at the end of the Badlands era and affected the making of Hopeless Fountain Kingdom deeply).

This film only has a good message, but at the same time this movie comprises a series of bad dialogues and shows a shallow direction with irrelevant screenplay. The new villan, Vishal Jethwa) acted good but was dragged back by the poor written dialogues and Mukherjee runs ahead of her dialogues all the time and it looks like a +3 sec audio syn like acting.

Beneath the concave cheekbones, the magical handguns with infinite bullet capacity, and the byzantine criminal underworld that stretches to every corner of the globe, he’s just a monosyllabic middle-aged man who wants to be left the fuck alone. When the first movie of this increasingly ridiculous saga began, Mr. Wick was grieving his wife’s death in peace—then some Russian mobsters made the mistake of killing his dog (her name was Daisy, and she was very cute). This aggression, unknowingly committed against a man so dangerous that he used to be known as “Baba Yaga, ” forced John back into the network of contract killers he’d once left behind. And ever since the shadowy crime lords of the High Table sniffed blood, they haven’t lost the scent or minded their own business. At the end of “मलंग, ” our laconic hero committed a big no-no by shooting a pest on the consecrated grounds of the Continental Hotel, but desperate times call for desperate measures, and every New Yorker knows what it’s like when the world gets a bit too close for comfort. Giddy, exhausting, and breathtakingly violent, “मलंग” begins a few seconds मलंग the previous installment left off, with the excommunicated assassin trying to make the most of the hour-long headstart he’s been given to hide before the $14 million bounty on his head is triggered and the entire criminal underworld comes मलंग him. Of course, anyone who’s seen the previous films in this unexpected franchise knows that its criminal underworld is more of an overworld, and that almost every featured extra? —? from street vendors and waiters to dog-walkers and homeless people? —? is a heat- packing hired gun who uses their role in the capitalist system as a disguise for their deeper allegiance to a veiled society that operates on an ancient market of codes and blood oaths. Now that Mr. Wick is square in the middle of all of those crosshairs, it’s become comically impossible for the deathless widower to find the solace he seeks. He’s a target, and it seems like the entire world has its finger on the trigger; he used to be anonymous, but now he’s a celebrity. In its most enjoyably demented moments, “Parabellum” is nothing short of a non-stop metaphor for being famous. Less artful but more concussive than its immediate predecessor, this latest outing finds Mr. Wick being clocked by strangers every time he enters a room, stalked by his biggest fans, and so desperate for someone who will treat him like an actual human being that he travels all the way to the Sahara Desert to find them. Everyone in the world knows him by name, New York City is the only place on Earth he can hide in plain sight, and the perks of his job don’t seem to compare with the harassment that comes with them. As Wick stumbles through the wet neon streets of Times Square—returning us to a surprisingly involved film world that flows like “The Raid” and looks like a hyper-saturated Instagram feed? —? it’s hard not to think of Reeves’ recent experience on a malfunctioning airplane, and how even that death-defying ordeal was turned into a viral moment (to the actor’s mild chagrin). Reeves once said that Wick was 40% him, but that number seems to have crept up a bit this time around. No movie has ever expressed the fight for anonymity with such viscerally literal force. True to the serialized nature of its title, “मलंग” starts in media res and ends on a cliffhanger. For an 131-minute film that devotes roughly 110 minutes of its runtime to people shooting each other in the head at close range, it would be almost impossible to follow for someone who isn’t up to speed. Still, the gist of the plot is pretty simple: John Wick kills a lot of people. Like, a lot of people. By the end of “Parabellum, ” he’s basically the leading cause of death in henchmen between the ages of 25 and 50. More of a one-man massacre than ever before (but just raggedy enough to keep things “real”), Mr. Wick fights in a punishingly brutal style that builds on what director Chad Stahelski invented for the character in the previous films. This is a character who appears to know every single language under the sun, but violence is the most expressive part of his vocabulary (Reeves speaks maybe 100 words in the entire movie). Chinese wushu, Japanese judo, Southeast Asian silat, American Glock… Wick is fluent in them all. But while Stahelski and his team have obviously put a great deal of thought into every frame of fisticuffs, “Parabellum” is so relentless that it often devolves into a numbing flurry of shoulder flips and headshots. If “Chapter 2” bordered on high art for how cleverly it weaved tactical shootouts into public locations (and made every fight operate like an organic bit of world-building), “Chapter 3” is more out in the open. A sneaky little skirmish in Grand Central Station doesn’t live up to Stahelski’s creative potential, even if it’s amazing they pulled off the scene at all. Elsewhere, a motorcycle chase along an empty Manhattan bridge is too rushed and blurry to deliver the “Fury Road” ferocity it teases, and the climactic brawl? —? which makes great use of some familiar faces, and hinges on a funny dynamic of mutual respect—is overwhelmed by a set that looks like a high-end watch commercial, and feels like a watered-down retread of the house of mirrors sequence from the end of the previous movie. Driven by a profound respect for the expressive power of beating someone to death, and empowered by their 54-year-old star’s remarkable skill and commitment, Stahelski and the other poets of percussive carnage that work at his 87Eleven Productions are still (a severed) head and shoulders above the rest of Hollywood’s stunt community. But they can do more with this character, even if it means slowing things down and widening them out. “मलंग” To that end, it’s telling that the most exciting brawl in “Parabellum” (with the possible exception of a knife fight in a Chinatown antiques store) maintains a more expansive vision, as Mr. Wick fights alongside Halle Berry and some four-legged sidekicks. Traveling to Casablanca for reasons that are never adequately explained, Mr. Wick meets up with an assassin named Sofia who owns a pair of well-trained Malinois dogs; like every other supporting character in this movie, there’s mixed blood between them, and she owes him something for some reason. There are coins and seals and lots of jibber jabber about High Table manners and then “Game of Thrones” star Jerome Flynn shows up as a Bronn-like business type who’s a bit too greedy for his own good (it’s hard to tell what accent Flynn is doing here, but he’s most definitely doing it). When the bullets fly, Sofia’s very good boys lend a valuable assist, and Stahelski has to open things up in order to frame the dogs as they chew on fresh corpses. The sequence is very “John Wick” and horribly terrific in a hand-over-your-mouth kind of way; it does more than any of the tossed-off business with the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburn) or the Continental Hotel owner (Ian McShane) to whet our appetites for another adventure. Anjelica Huston is also somewhat wasted as the matriarch of a Harlem ballet academy with ties to Wick’s past, but her scenes are so immaculately shot that you’re willing to let it slide. In a film that plays fast and loose with NYC geography, all is forgiven by turning 175th street’s United Palace into the “Tarkovsky Theater, ” where people are trained to be killers in between performances of “Swan Lake. ” The film’s world-building works best in small doses. A meeting in the middle of the desert is a total dead end, whereas all sorts of fun details can be inferred from Stahelski’s frequent cutaways to the High Table nerve center, where dozens of tattooed and lip-glossed workers monitor Wick’s bounty with an old-fashioned switchboard (imagine a SuicideGirls reboot of “Mad Men” and you’ll have the right idea). Non-binary “Billions” star Asia Kate Dillon plays a stiff and slinky High Table adjudicator who’s covered in Thierry Mugler coture; part referee and part femme fatale, their performance speaks to an underworld that’s sustained by a mutual respect for all people so long as they don’t shoot the wrong target. While this franchise is starting to feel a bit long in the tooth, such details suggest that screenwriter Derek Kolstad (here sharing credit with three other scribes) can still mine this world for plenty of new life, so long as future installments find a way to deepen the John Wick mythos instead of just stretching it out. With the significant exception of “Mission: Impossible, ” this is easily the best action franchise Hollywood has going these days, and it would be great for it to keep going with renewed focus. The fact that Keanu Reeves is nearing 60 won’t matter to his fans. For one thing, the man is seemingly ageless. For another, retirement no longer seems like a realistic option for a guy who still gets recognized everywhere he goes. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Hollywood star or a $14 million bounty—fame can be a difficult thing to shake. It’s a work-or-die world, and being forgotten is neither on the table nor under it.
